Rocky Velvet formed in New York as young men just out of high school. Over the years, they’ve cultivated a reputation as one of America’s premier roots rock bands. Metroland, the newsweekly of New York’s Capital Region, crowned them “Best Band.” This reputation didn’t come easily because they seemed more like a legend than an actual band. The truth is, Rocky Velvet has been slugging it out in clubs numerous times a year and refining their chops and reputation. For a long time, the demand was much higher than the supply for this band.
They endured a few dormant periods while members spread out across the country and the world, playing with various artists including Chuck Berry, Bo Diddley, Wanda Jackson, Robert Gordon, Marti Brom, Commander Cody, Eddie Angel, Linda Gail Lewis and Bones Maki. They’ve also opened for folks such as Link Wray, Big Sandy & the Fly-Rite Boys, Wayne Hancock, Rosie Flores and Los Straitjackets.
In addition, the individual members were involved in side projects ranging from garage rock and power pop bands to jazz gigs and session work. Rocky Velvet is the real deal, tapping into the analog spirit of Sun Records and the ghosts of dusty ‘50s roadhouses.
